Tor and libevent on Slack 10.2

I'm trying to install Tor, which requires me to have libevent. I install libevent perfectly fine, but when I go to run ./configure for Tor, I get this error:

checking for libevent directory... (system)
checking whether we need extra options to link libevent... configure: error: Found linkable libevent in (system), but it doesn't run, even with -R. Maybe specify another using --with-libevent-dir?

I've tried to fix this with several different combinations, but unsuccessful. Any suggestions to fix this?

Did you run ldconfig? It might help. (If you've rebooted your computer since istalling libevent, ldconfig should have been run automatically)

Code:
man ldconfig

I realize that this thread was posted a long time ago, but I wanted to add that I had the same problem even after reboot. I ran ldconfig just now and I was able to run ./configure without any errors. Thanks!
