Thunderbird starts over, not accessing existing mail
I'm running Slacko 5.4 with Thunderbird 15.0.1
I normally have to click on the Thunderbird desktop icon to start it because it is not included on the menus. I mention this because in case it is related to the problem -- but that's not my problem. (I added Thunderbird because I don't like the email client that came with Puppy.)
A few days ago, when I did this as usual, it opened a page asking if I would like to set up a new account. None of my mail was there. I set up a fake account and copied my old mail folders to the new mail folder. It worked for a very short time (sorry, don't remember if I could close and open it more than once -- was busy with more urgent matters), but the next time it "lost" everything and asked for a new account again. The profile folder seemed to have all the old mail files.
Thinking it could be due to the file being too large, I had deleted a lot of mail and pasted in the smaller files. I'd been using Thunderbird for several months with no problems, but this has happened before, more than once.
Due to the time needed to recreate the mail folders, I wanted to ask for help before experimenting again.
Might be time to start over with a newer Puppy since I'll have to copy the email again.
(BTW, someone else uses the computer more than I, so I don't know everything that's happened. I'm the one delegated to fix things.)
I don't have an exact solution but I do have some thoughts. At one time, I was using Precise 5.6.1 and installed Thunderbird, too, because I didn't find the client that came with Puppy sufficient. For the most part, it worked fine, however, if I remember correctly, it wouldn't delete any mail using the shortcut key from the keyboard. I had to manually delete by clicking continuously on the "delete" button. I didn't have that problem in Ubuntu or Lubuntu. I suspected something with Puppy didn't allow Thunderbird to run correctly and I still believe that's the case. What you've written kind of confirms my suspicions.
It might be helpful first to find out from the others using the system what, if anything, they might be doing or not doing that may be contributing to the problem. I've not heard of Thunderbird doing this before. I found this page, if it helps any.
I'm not sure if switching to different versions of Puppy would solve this problem, to be honest but your version of Thunderbird is fairly old at this point, going back to 2012.

Reason: Added information.
Creating a new profile with a custom name seems to be working. Can't yet say if Thunderbird won't lose the profile again, but for now I can open and close the program with everything remaining there.
I left the Puppy and T-bird distros as is -- better to fix one thing at a time.
