You didn't state that at the beginning though .
Besides, though I have worked in "IT" most of my working life I'm far from a geek when it comes to Linux and regularly need to google for ages or ask for help here when I'm trying something new or I have made a mistake.

We're not even 25% into 2014! How can Carla Shroeder purport to present the "best" for the year?

It's worse than that - the article is dated January 14th, which would put it at less than 4% into 2014.

It'll be Slackware, Ubuntu, Mint and Fedora. Occasionally they throw something stupid in to make sure it looks like they did research.

Well Lubuntu,Xubuntu Ubuntu 14.04 they come from the same, only diferent desktops,i have Ubuntu 14.04Beta1 and instead of Unity that i don't like, i run gnome flashback session (Metacity) and for me is an outstanding distro,if it runs this good now when it's final version comes out within a few days then it must be better!,i don't find nothing wrong with it no bugs so far.

I took it to be "... best distributions to use/start using in... ". The best distribution for 2014 can hardly be one that you can't use until 2015 -- that would be the best distribution of 2015.

Don't count on it. Hopefully there will be no regressions

Xfce looks older than Cinnamon, but the applications list is better.

You realise that one can install Xfce4 application onto a system that's running Cinnamon right?

I've been using the Linux Mint cinnamon edition, and find cinnamon not very stable

Arch doesn't suit my purposes, so don't use it, but i think it's the best package manager out there, Much better than Apt. I regard Zypper as the second best; also much better than apt. Of cause that's only my opinion.
