Besides, though I have worked in "IT" most of my working life I'm far from a geek when it comes to Linux and regularly need to google for ages or ask for help here when I'm trying something new or I have made a mistake.

Well Lubuntu,Xubuntu Ubuntu 14.04 they come from the same,only diferent desktops,i have Ubuntu 14.04Beta1 and instead of Unity that i don't like, i run gnome flashback session (Metacity) and for me is an outstanding distro,if it runs this good now when it's final version comes out within a few days then it must be better!,i don't find nothing wrong with it no bugs so far.

I took it to be "... best distributions to use/start using in... ". The best distribution for 2014 can hardly be one that you can't use until 2015 -- that would be the best distribution of 2015.
Arch doesn't suit my purposes, so don't use it, but i think it's the best package manager out there, Much better than Apt. I regard Zypper as the second best; also much better than apt. Of cause that's only my opinion.
