system-config-display -noui now i cant see anything

I have a basic f13 install with tigervnc, kde desktop, GeForce 9400 and was following this tutorial http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=229781 and got to system-config-display -noui and restart x , what i actually did to restart x was /sbin/init 3 and then /sbin/init 5. The result of this was a screwed up login page (colors and everything are everywhere, block of brown up top etc) and all the text during startup has disappeared replaced by a flashing underline. I can login with vnc and command line. ideally setting everything back to the way it was would be fine what would be better would be getting everything and tiger working as well.

thanks in advance for any help
