I'm running Mandriva 2006 and I've installed Gnome, but I can't find the tool to switch. I tried xwinit (or however was recomended in one of the previouse threads) but it didn't work.
I can't seem to switch in the session menu either.
I'm unaware how KDM handles this (you use KDM as your graphical login manager, right?), but with GDM you simply choose a new session (Gnome), then give username/password and are asked whether or not to make it the default session. Answer yes and you're fine..
have you installed gnome first?
during your os installation you should have installed gnome with kde, normally only one is installed.
I am not sure how to change from kde to gnome in Mandrivia, but in FreeBSD you have a .xinitrc in your home dir, where you need to change to gnome-session instead of startkde.
b0uncer is right: choosing your window manager at the login prompt should do.
If it is not an option for you, then maybe it is because you have "autologin" enabled. In this case, open Mandriva's control center, enter the boot section, and change the desktop to use for the user that is "auto-logged-in".
now I get a menu when I logg in that asks me what window manager I want to use.
however, no other user than root can logg in.
the x-windows just starts over when I try to logg in anyother user and it gets me back to the logg in prompt.
the only user that can logg in under X-windows is root. all of the window managers work, just no user can logg in. (not even to the previouse session.)
