start prob

I am using a Koppix 6.0.6.When I start the pc it asks for login name.Earlier,I used to get a GUI loogin window. But now evrything is in shell.Like,I am asked for login name in command prompt. Then when I login and then type 'startx'.It askes to delete temporary file .X0-authority in etc/usr.

Then when I try to delete that file the system asks me to log in as root and change the permissions and when I try logging as root its says

"NO SHELL".
CAn ayone help me for this.

What runlevel is it on your system? try typing "runlevel" in a terminal.
If you're not on runlevel 5, then try "sudo telinit 5" and see if that brings up the login screen. (if it doesn't and the screen just gets dark for a moment, look in /var/log/xorg.0.log and see if it got some clues)

also, could you post what login manager you are using (kdm?)

Has anyone found any solution to my problem startup.I am using a knoppix machine and the problem simply is not going.

Let me explain aht I am doing. When I login and give startx to start the PC then it says-:

using authority file /home/login./Xauthority

writing authority file/home/login/.Xauthority

fatal server error :

Server is already active for diaplay zero.

If this server is no longer running remove /tmp/.X0-lock.

When I try to remove this file it says that you dont have permission to remove this file and when I try to login as root it says that

NO SHELL.

Please,suggest a solution for this.

Hi,

Well it looks like for one reason or another, your X server is failing to start. What video card are you using?

You are running knoppix from a CD, right?

Try typing:

Quote:
knoppix xmodule=vesa

or

knoppix xmodule=fbdev

at the first boot screen, and the initial un-accelerated XFree86 modes will produce a usable screen.
(from http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Hardware...sn.27t_work.21)

You should get the familiar graphical login. This is just a temporary fix, not a solution.

If you can find it, please post your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file.
If you don't have one, look for xfree86.conf or xorg.conf in the same location.

no shell remains

Hi,

The startup problem so how got solved.I am not running the Knoppix from the CD but I am running it from my hard drive. Its installed in my hard drive.

The problem was there because the knopix machine was not shutdown properly. We have a power problem here and some times even with back up the machine gets shut down in O/S.

Now,the problem with No Shell is not yet solved and I am not able to login as root because of that.

Can you tell me about that.

Regards,

Automata..

Now that you can get back in your os, can you open a terminal and become root there?

It seems that what ever damage that occurred, it removed the defaults for your root account. So the computer doesn't know what shell root uses. I think the only solution would be to re-install the OS, unless the knoppix boot disk has some recovery tools that I'm not aware of.
