set a password prompt for an application

I am using Linux Mint 14 Nadia with the MATE GUI and I was wondering if there is any way to set a password prompt for an application when trying to open it. In particular I mean the Chromium web browser. The final goal is for instance to have Chrome opening freely without any credentials needed, but Chromium to be password protected.

If it was a standalone binary you could change ownership and have to sudo it but with chromium there are so many dependent files that if you change the ownership of one of them I bet it would lose functionality.

If you give us some background on what your actual end goal is there may be some alternate solutions. Why do you have the need to password protect chromium? Is it only for a specific user?
