Seeking PNG viewer to See Background Apps through Alpha Channels

I'm looking for a way to display PNGs on my desktop such that their alpha channels allow my desktop and background applications to be seen where the PNGs are not completely opaque. An application whose alpha-channel is defined by the PNG it's currently displaying. Any ideas?

Seven weeks later I've found what I was looking for, so I thought I'd post it here in case it helps someone else out. The solution is `qiv -p`. I love this program.

Now I can design a set of slick visual feedback PNGs for my hardware volume buttons that overlay my UI a la OSX. Very cool.

I'd be interested to see a screenshot a a little more details on how you set that up. Sounds very cool...

I don't have time for anything too fancy right now, but here's what I've got. This will at least get you started.

Thumbnails aren't working for me. Here's a screenshot.

I use lineakd to capture my hardware buttons (there are several other options for this). My lineakd.conf lists the following:
Code:
Mute = "/opt/sound-indicator.sh mute"
Unmute = "/opt/sound-indicator.sh unmute"
VolumeDown = "/opt/sound-indicator.sh 1-"
VolumeUp = "/opt/sound-indicator.sh 1+"
And my sound-indicator.sh is:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
amixer set Master $1
vol=`amixer get Master | grep Left: | sed 's/^.*\[\(.*\)%\].*/\1/'`
if [[ "`amixer get Master | grep Left: | sed 's/^.*\[\(.*\)\].*/\1/'`" = "off" ]]; then
        fill="#F00"
else
        fill="#FFF"
fi
if [[ $vol = "0" ]]; then
        convert -size 102x5 xc:"#444" /tmp/sndvol.png
else
        convert -size 102x5 xc:"#444" -fill $fill -draw "rectangle 1,1 $vol,3" /tmp/sndvol.png
fi
qiv -p /tmp/sndvol.png &
sleep 1
kill $!
So there you go. It's quite plain, but it looks nice enough that I may not bother designing anything fancier any time soon. If you do improve upon it though, please post it here.

Also you might also want to mpg321 a short sound effect, as in OSX's signature popping.

You can't, you can only edit them. I think Jeremy might be able to, but I think it is done only in extreme circumstances.
