Question Screen Resolution: bigger than 800x600?

I haven a HP pavillion dv6000 laptop that came with windows vista when i ran vista i had a 1280x800 screen resolution when i run xubuntu i can only use 800x600. Is there any way to make it bigger?
Also i haven't installed xubuntu yet i've just tried it without installing.

What graphics chipset are you running, such as "powered by ATI" "powered by NVIDIA"?

If I remember right, Ubuntu uses synaptic.
Open synaptic.
If it has some sort of refresh function or whatever, refesh it so it can see what you have installed to your system as well as synch with the repositories.
It's normally the button in the upper left hand corner.
After it completes, search for nvidia.
Select the appropriate driver for your nvidia card and apply/install it.
