Screen Display Problems

I have seen a few posts on this problem but have found no answers.
Windoze sees my video card as ViaChrome9HC IGP and my monitor is a Flatron L1950T
I have just installed Ubuntu 8.04 and the Startup screen is OK but when it goes to the logon screen I get a corrupted split image with broken horizontal lines accross it.
xorg.conf reads:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
Can,t seem to get past this with a live CD or installation.
When I try another monitor I get thick diagonal lines splitting the image
Would appreciate advice

Hi and welcome to LQ.

That card doesn't work very well with most Linux distros. The only distro that has managed to automatically configure it correctly for me is openSUSE using the fbdev driver.

Hi. Take a look at this thread for a solution. The guy managed to get the vesa driver working fine with that card. If it doesn't work properly, use fbdev.
