Rhythmbox Woes

Hi all,

Today is day one for me as a linux user. Can anyone suggest one of the following:

a) an alternative to Rhythmbox that manages podcasts and allows media directories to be shared folders on other machines on the network?

b) a way of fixing my rhythmbox installation. See the details below...

Within Rhythmbox I designated a shared drive as my media directory, after about 30 minutes of processing with nothing but a long list of exceptions, I got suspicious. I shut it down and did some reading.

I realized that no program would play mp3 files, so I figured out the answer to that problem and successfully played an mp3 in Totem. Then I opened Rhythmbox again, but it hung. I tried updating it with Yum, and that went smoothly but didn't help with the problem. So then I used the software package manager to uninstall and then reinstall rhythmbox. That still didn't help. It crashes consistently now, within about 10 seconds of starting. If you crash it more than 3 times, it takes the whole system down.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

Thom

You say you used yum, so I'll assume you use Fedora Core.

try opening rythmbox from a terminal. If there are any errors it would be a good Idea to post them here.

just open a terminal, typing `rythmbox` at the prompt should get results...

Thanks for the tip. I tried what you said, (after reinstalling for a second time) and for whatever reason, the problem seems to be gone. I think the problem was a corrupt library file or something like that because the first time I reinstalled, the refreshed installation still had all my podcast subscriptions. The second time I reinstalled, those subscriptions were gone, and so was my problem.

Anyways, for what it's worth, I did get these error message in terminal:

(rhythmbox:2425): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed.

(rhythmbox:2425): Rhythmbox-WARNING **: couldn't connect to session bus: No repl y within specified time

But, I'm guessing that these messages are here simply b/c rhythmbox doesn't have a text interface. Please let me know if there's more to it than that.

In the mean time, all seems well, so thanks again,

Thom
