Making the assumption that you have not been able to run any x11 successfully at this point I would suggest updating your x11 packages

Quote:
# yum groupinstall 'X Window System'
If you are looking for a specific desktop I would suggest seeing what is available (and installing what you desire using groupinstall)
Quote:
# yum grouplist "*Desktop*"
Hope that helps

No idea, since you don't post enough details. What do you mean by "frequently gets restarted"? Do you mean X crashes? The whole system? Does it lock up or reboot spontaneously? And WHY are you logging in as root and running X????? That is a VERY bad practice. Have you looked at the X logs?

And as numerous people have told you several times now...if you're not PAYING for RHEL, then you SHOULD NOT BE USING IT. Running the yum commands as LinuxMR gave you, will only work if the system is paid for/registered. You don't ever seem to acknowledge this. AGAIN: If you absolutely NEED RHEL, then PAY FOR IT...otherwise, use CentOS, which is 99.x% IDENTICAL, but FREE. And again, unless you NEED a server-class distro like that...DON'T USE CENTOS EITHER.

RHEL, SLES, CentOS, and other server-class distros aren't meant to run 'consumer' hardware...things like sound, decent graphics, bluetooth, and other such things are NOT found on servers, so they're either not supported, or poorly supported. You can load Fedora or Mint, and not lose ANY functionality, or the ability to run services.

...which STILL tells us nothing, and you still don't acknowledge the parts about using RHEL unsupported.

If you're not going to post details, look at your log files, or even give a decent description of the problem, there's not much point in posting.

on RHEL
WHY are you even using "startx" !!!
if the gnome desktop is installed and this is NOT a headless server then initab is set yo boot into run level 5

that is the DEFAULT setting
int 3 is NOT

reset your intab file to boot into level 5

as in undo the changes YOU made to that file
and set it back to 5
