Restarting the computer via GUI
 
I have two computers both running Ubuntu Hardy Heron. One will restart and turn off using the GUI, the other will not. The second one prints the restart instruction on the screen but the command does not reach the hardware. I have been through the BIOS setup but cannot find anything unusual there. The computers are both similar specifications in tower boxes but not absolutely identical.
Can anyone suggest where the problem lies please?

ACPI ... check settings, serviceconfig .. also bios settings

Does "sudo shutdown -ha now" work?

Thanks for your suggestion but the result is exactly the same as using the GUI.
