rescan for monitor

I have a video card with 2 outputs.
I don't usually have a monitor on the second output (HDMI).
I have to reboot if want to use a second monitor.
Is there a way to force lubuntu to rescan for the second monitor.
If the video card is disabling the output because there is no signal, can I fake it out so it keeps the output active?

From what I have read and experienced, graphics drivers and cards are not as hot swappable as, say, other PCI devices. Don't plug the monitor in and out of a live system either, your monitor may not last so long. It'd be nice to avoid scanning monitors/projectors that are normally turned off but detected all the same. In other words I'm pretty sure that right now, the answer is No.

Maybe.

First, see this thread:

...I posted some time ago. I had figured that out, for the exact same reason, and shoving that line into my xorg.conf did the trick for me then. HOWEVER....later on, I went with the proprietary nVidia drivers, and it 'just worked'. For openSUSE, there is a set of nVidia tools...not sure if they're available for lubuntu, though, but when I run those, it does allow me configure a second monitor just by plugging one in.
