remote desktop, LXDE, Xsession fails

Hi guys,

I just got my Raspberry Pi installed as a headless server. What a PITA! Since it is headless I needed to use my laptop as the session manager. I have done this before and documented it here: http://64.124.13.3/hacks/multiple_wm.html
It works kinda. Using the following commands:
On my laptop:
as root login on virtual terminal F2
X -ac :1.0
on R-Pi:
Login as root.
export DISPLAY=192.168.1.10:1:0
startlxde
This will cause the Xsession on vt7 to fail with
AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0
If I use these commands, it works:
On my laptop:
as root login on virtual terminal F2
X -ac :1.0
on R-Pi:
Login as root.
export DISPLAY=192.168.1.10:1:0
gedit
startlxde
Any ideas? I running raspbian on the R-Pi and Fedora 13 on my laptop.

try starting an xterm or something, may be that it needs an app to export first.

Yes, that is what 'gedit' is.

it's not listed in the first one.

The first one fails. only if I start gedit or some other X-application first, will it work.

i think that may be the point... you need to start something to export to the remote desktop, or it exports nothing.

This is not true with other distros I have used. None of them require an application running before starting the Window manager. I only notice this problem with raspbian ( Debian ).

since i use xming, i have to point at it, there's options to have a new connection for every app, the apps in a root window, and a bunch of others. it may be that the x client is sending a new connection with every app or something.
