You are not supposed to start GDM directly. Change your default runlevel from 3 to 5 in /etc/inittab and gdm will be started at boot time. You can also just switch to root from a terminal and run "init 5" and gdm will start.

when I change my run level to 5 I get a logon screen but when i log on I dont get a desktop I get a command window. I think I start in some sort of terminal mode. that is why I am trying gdm to start the desktop.

You can put something like "exec gnome-session" (or whatever commands that are used to start your DE or WM) into a file called ~/.xsession and that will make sure that your favourite WM or DE is started by default.
