PVR-150, xawtv4, and recording

Hey,

linux n00b here running Ubuntu 6.10 (edgy). i'm trying to get a pvr-150 capture card to capture tapes from my analog video camera.

i've installed the ivtv module (0.7.3) and xawtv4 (cvs) which is supposed to support ivtv. xawtv4 displays the streaming video and audio from the camera, but hitting "R" or selecting the record option does nothing.

can anyone shed any light on what might be wrong? does xawtv4 only support display from ivtv devices so far?

p.s. a side note, the video display shows a strange banding effect whenever there is movement on the video, as if the frames are bleeding into each other. help on that front would also be appreciated.

In that past for quick video captures like that I've typed cat /dev/video0 > file.mpg into a terminal and then hit play on the machine. You get a bit of blank space at the beginning, but no big deal, easy to cut out later. Then to end the recording, just hit Ctrl+C to kill the cat.

If this recording also has the banding and messed up video, it might be a driver issue (I believe 2.6.18 kernels must use ivtv 0.8 series).

thanks for the quick response. i haven't been able to get audio working when i use cat though. is there a setting to play with to get audio to work with cat?

Hmmm. Now that I think about it, I haven't ever really noticed the audio... I'll have to go check a couple of the ones I did tonight. I haven't cared about the audio when I do this because it has always been for a presentation I was going to just be talking to the video.
