Problems with Java 'upgrade' ??????
 

Howdy! :hattip:

I'm having some oportunities to learn (problem) with trying to install the 'upgrade' to Java. I go through all the steps in loading it and a box opens up and says "The administrator has set up (something) to block this upgrade. I'm on a single user computer... I'M the Admin and I did no such thing. How to I undo this so I can download the Java Upgrade?

I've tried 'deleting' it in Add or Remove Software in the Control Panel and it won't delete it, it just has a drop-down box that says something about having a dual program, then stops and doesn't remove a thing. I'm really puzzled. :banghead: ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for LQ^QKing.

Add or remove software in the control panel? Not windows, right?

Basically get the binary from java.sun.com and run it as root (command line) in best location.

I don't update the sitting code set, just add a new one in /usr/java. After repointing your sym links, you can throw away the old ones if you want.

You mean the totally messed up thread that has the OP changing his $PATH?

And changing symlinks? None of which are necessary.

Doesn't help that the OP in this thread doesn't say what distro he is using, but one assumes he is using Ubuntu. In which case the link I previously posted gives very clear instructions.

And without totally screwing up his system by messing with his $PATH or changing symlinks.

The O/S in question is WIN XP HOME. Now, I plan on changing to Xbuntu 12.4?, but I will have to acquire 2 gigs of P-2700 RAM for this Dell 2400. In the meantime, I'm stuck with XPee :mad:

I can't see why computer programs have to be so squirrely. Some make it impossible to install, some make it impossible to delete, and some just don't work the way you want them too, LOL!

The ONLY reason I use JAVA is to "see" the NOAA Wx site and radar maps during severe wx. I go to the Shreveport site and it gives me the local Shreveport radar out of Fort Worth's servers. These radar images are more detailed than the local TV stations radars. That's real important when you're tracking a storm.

Now back to the "problem". I've tried going to the Command Line, and in the C: drive I had to CD to Program Files, then did a del/java. That didn't work, so I tried del\java, that didn't work either. Neither does delete\java or delete/java. So looks like I'm gonna have JAVA 6 version 24 until I hard format the 120 gig hard drive. :redface:

Yes, it's a Windows O/S and most of y' all run Linux of some kind, but maybe someone has a solution ;) for me.

Although this is not a Windows Forum, I will say try booting in safemode & go to the real Admin acct.

If winsxp is trashed backup data. You can always reinstall from the i386 folder.
by double-clicking winnt.exe file, without a windows installation cd

Wonders why the OP would need 2GB of ram to run Xubuntu?

As for Java on windows not the slightest clue as I haven't touched a windows xp system since 2004.
