problems w/ gnome (xsession closes when switching between ttys

I can start x w/ startx on either of my users and it will run fine till I switch to another console. When I do it messes up and I have to ctrl-c to kill it. It won't run under root user either and when I try to login through gdm3 it won't startup right either. On the tty I started x from it will say
Code:
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the x server
Like I said, it will just hang and I have to kill it w/ ctrl-c

Any ideas?
