problem with gnome-session

platform: Oracle Enterprise Linux/REHL 4

I am pretty new to Linux, but have been working with Solaris, AIX, and HP-UX for several years - though in a DBA role, not an SA role.

Getting the gnome desktop on my XP Pro desktop has been a bit inconsistent in results, but in general it seems to throw the same error messages even when the desktop itself does display and operate.

Here's the sequence of events:

1) Start Exceed
2) establish an ssh connection to the Linux box, using putty.
3) set the display:
$> export DISPLAY=55.xxx.xxx.xxx:0.0
4) start gnome:
$> gnome-session

as the x-session starts, I get this in my putty session:

SESSION_MANAGER=local/ngtnc2-47270-05:/tmp/.ICE-unix/24277
Window manager warning: Log level 32: could not find XKB extension.

** (gnome-panel:24306): WARNING **: Unable to load panel stock icon 'gnome-debian'

and after I exit the desktop, the putty session continues with this:

manager.c/1070: Received 'die', initiating shutdown
manager.c/1003: unmounting all volumes that we saw mounted in our life
/usr/lib64/python2.3/site-packages/gtk-2.0/gtk/__init__.py:90: GtkDeprecationWarning: gtk.mainquit is deprecated, use gtk.main_quit instead
self.warn(message, DeprecationWarning)

(nautilus:24308): Eel-CRITICAL **: file eel-preferences.c: line 872 (preferences_entry_remove_callback): assertion `entry->callback_list != NULL' failed

** (nautilus:24308): WARNING **: destroyed file still being monitored

(nautilus:24308): Bonobo-WARNING **: Leaked a total of 1 refs to 1 bonobo object(s)

So my question is, what is the meaning of all those warning and error messages? More importantly, should I address them or am I chasing an 'non-issue'?
