OpenOffice 2.0.2 Impress Insert movie and sound

Hi all,

I am trying to insert some video into a presentation I am doing.

The problem is that when I tried to insert the video it comes back with the following error:
"The format of the selected file is not supported"

The thing is I have tried to insert other video footage that it says it supports only to get the same error.

Formats tried are:

ASF
Quicktime MOV
WMV
MPEG
Does anybody have any thoughts as to what might be the problem?

Thanks in advance.

-Mike

I had the same problem until I read this howto. First, give up on using java media framework. It is a royal PITA.

The howto shows you how to create a macro that in turn runs mplayer (or whatever media player you prefer). Much simpler, although you don't get the benefit of inlining a video. in your presentation (you get an icon that runs your macro).

Thanks GrueMaster,

That would be great if the presentation was going to be viewed on my machine, however it will be viewed in PowerPoint on an XP machine so ideally I would like to get it working without having to worry about cross compatibility.

That is really going to be tough, as this is one of those areas where compatibility tends to fall short. All of the Powerpoint presentations I have worked with that contain media (audio or video clips) have pulled them off the hard drive separately. I have received a lot of presentations that were missing the audio or video clips. This is also where even having the clips can fail, as Powerpoint uses full paths (c:\Documents and Settings\...etc).

I don't know what to tell you other than maybe use relative paths and keep the media files in the same directory as your presentation. Beyond that, as long as Windows has the codec, it should work.
