Nvidia video driver issue

Hi! I was hoping somebody can point me in the right direction to fixing this issue. I just updated my Ubuntu to 11.04 64bit and now I am having issues with my vid card. I actually did a clean install to see if it was a upgrade bug but still no dice. I uninstalled the opensource drivers and installed the nvidia-current driver. I did it first through the gui additional drivers but it shows driver wasn't activated. I removed and reinstalled through command by issuing

sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

I restarted x and tried to run nvida-settings but it shows I am not using it still. What am I missing?

Thanks

btw I am using nvidia 9500gt

Somewhere there in the additional driver utility you can enable or disable the driver. Did you try this?

Asumming you are refering in the additional driver gui yes I activated it. But then you can close it and reopen it and it shes not activated. Even after x server restart and reboot.

Yea that's frustrating when what's meant to work doesn't work :(. I've run into this quite a number of times myself, so I understand you pretty well.

Well I remember having this problem once in the past, I had to download the driver from NVIDIA and install manually. But there were some related issues, I don't remember what else I had to do to make it all work.

(Though right now I'm quite satisfied with nouveau as I'm not much interested in effects and all that.)

Nouveau does get the job done for 2d but I like to run 3d apps as well so I kinda need to figure this issue out lol. I also want to start video editing in my linux as well. So this is made a toughy on me and I'm about ready to throw ubuntu out the window. I know this driver works just fine with other distros such as fedora. I've even tried installing the binary from nvidia its self where the settings and stuff do work but for some reason 3d performace was horrid. In ubuntu 10.x this was no problem at all.

Did you try earlier versions of the nVidia driver? I remember having problems with some given versions of the driver, too.

You know, in such uncertain situation one has to try every possible solution until one fially decides that it costs too much time. Then one can move to a different distro.
Though generally, in a number of ways, I'd prefer Ubuntu to Fedora.
