here is my current (working) xorg.conf. I forgot to backup the one that nvidia made, before re-installing slackware. I would try again but I dont wanna install all over again, do you know of a way to backup everything related to X11 and KDE? I'd really like a surefire way of backing up my system so that this doesnt happen again. Obviously backing up xorg.conf alone will not be enough on slackware.

Post #25 in that thread contains the basics of using .tgz and .tar.gz files. Slackware includes ARK which is a unzipping tool. What I generally do with packages, is move them to where I store all my packages, using konqueror as root (because I store the packages in /var/cache/packages) and then I right click them and select "Extract here...". This extracts the package into a new folder. Now, by reading the above link, and reading the README/INSTALL file in the package, you are ready to install it.
If the archive is an actual Slackware-Package (the nvidia driver is NOT) then in a console, the way to install a Slackware Package is:

simple as that.
If it is NOT actually a Slackware-Package but just an archived .tgz archive, then you follow the ./configure, make, and make install, which will do the same job.

For reading material about Slackware, consider downloading the Slackbook, for one thing. As for tutorials, I can't name one off the top of my head, but I'll add a few sites here if I think of them.

To backup X11 and KDE may be more trouble than its worth. Why not backup the entire installation? Then you could restore what you needed to from it if you had to. There's probably a way to ONLY backup X11 and KDE, but I don't know an easy way to do that efficiently.

On my system, as far as X and Nvidia, the only thing I ever backup all alone, is xorg.conf. I mean, to make my video card work, I need the nvidia binary installer; xorg.conf; and the kernel sources. That's it. When you installed the 2.6 kernel during installation, did you install the modules as well?? You have to copy and install the modules manually for that kernel, because they don't get installed during setup. If you were to use the 2.4 default kernel, it does install the modules. That's the easiest way, followed by compiling and installing your OWN 2.6 kernel & modules later.

So, congrats on trying Slackware I'm sure you will enjoy it after a little bit of getting used to it. And there are loads of loyal Slackware fans around here, myself included, who are able to help you get accustomed to the way it does things.
If it would help, I'm on MSN/Yahoo using Kopete (see my profile) if it would help to chat while setting up the nvidia/Slackware stuff.
For the record, the only thing that the nvidia driver installer does to the xorg.conf file is change the driver from 'nv' to nvidia', so while there's a lot of information in your above posts about what happened, got corrupted, messed up backups, I'm not clear on all that, or what exactly happened, but it is quite a straight forward process to get the nvidia installed and working.
Hope this helps you get started! and check the Slackware forum for lots of answers to common questions. As I said, I'll try coming up with some tutorial recomendations, but Google may be very handy meanwhile.

thanks a ton. As for the currupted weirdness, what happened was I backed up my xorg.conf as xorg.conf.backup, which it turns out so does the nvidia installer, so instead of overwriting the file, the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup got all currupted. At least thats my best guess. I will backup my whole system. Hopefully i wont mess it up lol, If not i can just install slackware again, not that big a deal.

As for the kernel thing, I did install the modules afterwards. Would you suggest the 2.4 or 2.6 I honestly couldnt tell the dif, except that 2.4 needs kernel arguments to burn (hdc=ide-scsi) and that hot-plug is different than udev not that I know how its different or how to get either working properly but thats a story for another thread. Im looking forward to playing with slackware.

I honestly think that there is some hardware confliction going on with my nvidia card and the rest of my computer. Because the prob isnt distro specific and im doing the exact same steps as others have on the same distro. I have two raid cards installed that I dont really use (one for firewire and the other just to have more USB ports than I'll ever use) so I might take one or both of them out and see what happens.

As for installing stuff on slackware, will a slackware pkg just be a .tar.gz or .tgz or do you have to decompress it before running installpkg? and is there a way to know it its a slackware pkg or do you just have to know thats what you downloaded?
PS: how'd the job interview go?

LOL, nice choice of backup filenames , who'd have thought !? But yes, it is easy and quick to reinstall it if you should need to.
<-------- (2.6.20) Personally, I go for the 2.6 kernel, because it's newer, thus 'better' and it uses UDEV which is the replacement for hotplug and works great and is less troublesome IMO, though I'm sure some folks differ in opinion. UDEV will totally replacehotplug eventually, so at some point, you may as well switch to 2.6 because UDEV won't work on 2.4 kernels.
Ultimately it's up to you, but I recommend 2.6.I also found it a little bit faster, but that's an unfair estimate anyways, because my 2.4 original kernel was stock, out of the box and big and fat and clumsy, VS my 2.6 which has been recompiled like 20 times until it's totally perfect and optimal for my hardware.

Interesting observation about the possibility of hardware conflicts.. It would be easy enough, and surely worth the peace of mind, to remove anything unnecessary from the machine and do some test runs.. Wouldn't be the first time for something like that, infact a while back I thought I had burnt out my onboard audio, so I stuck in a spare Hercules sound card; holy crap, that screwed up the whole computer, so I hadda remove it fast! Figured I was just fine without sound for now.. As it turned out, I think I had my PCI clock at a slightly wacky frequency, and the onboard sound device didn't like it. The sound came back by itself a few days later

A slackware package is always a .TGZ, however other NON-slackware archives can also be .tgz too.. Generally, one should know what one is downloading. Get stuff from sites such as the Slackware Package Browser website, a Slackware repository, of another place like sourceforge or whatever, which specifically tells you it's a Slack-Package. And you don't need to unpack them to install them when they're Slack-Packages.
With Slackware, it's so easy to install whatever you like, that as long as something comes in either a Slackpkg, or a tar.gz or .bz2 or basically ANY source-code archive that isn't distro-specific, you can install it. You can also install RPM's and .DEB's, but I have played with this VERY little, so I can't advise. There's a few folks around here who are Slack developers, at least one of whom has created a "Slack-Package-Maker" called src2pkg, which takes a NON-Slack-Package and makes a.. Well, you get the idea
You can tell the difference too, because if you try to install a .tgz or whatever, using pkgtool or slackpkg or swaret or whatever, and it tells you it can't install it, THEN you know you need to unpack the thing and do the configure/make/make_install.

The job interview went well, I thought. But I am still unemployed Thanks for inquiring! Oh well, more time to play with my Linux :P

well, I just compiled my first kernel since I tried Gentoo a long time ago (probably two years, maybe one, time seems to go by so fast), so this is the first time I had even the slightest Idea what I was doing, (I really am rather new to this) I still fumbled through it and I havent rebooted yet, but hopefully I didnt break anything, and I backed up and added the old kernel to lilo so hopefully im safe. We will see.

I pulled out my RAID card and my USB card just in case before compiling. When I reboot im gonna install the nvidia driver and see...wish me luck. *crossing fingers*

Well, The kernel didnt work, oh well, nothing ever works the first time...for right now im gonna stick to stock kernels for simplicities sake. I reinstalled slackware on an XFS partition (if thats of any significance I dont see how but you never know) with sepperate partitions for / /usr and /home.

I installed the nvidia driver once again, it built its own module as it usually does (because there arnt any pre-built kernels on nividia's website). I also ran the nvidia xorg.conf setup thing. Once again, I had no success, same problem...i do believe that I am cursed.

After reading some of the README stuff, I tried passing "agp=off" to my kernel through lilo, that didnt change anythign, I also tried setting the agp mode in my BIOS to 4x (the lowest my BIOS will give me). None of this worked, always the same problem. I was hoping that the RAID card was the problem but obviously not. I also looked through the chipset compatability list and I saw that K8T800 was on there, here is my lspci output:

it looks like the first hostbridge matches up (although the "pro" may be a prob) but this shouldnt matter anyway because if its not on that list you will need to use AGPGART which should work anyway..and the default setting for nvidia is to use AGPGART and if that doesnt work use the NV one.

I find it strange that this time replacing the xorg.conf with the old one works, where last time it didnt. It may have been that the xorg.conf-VESA or xorg.conf-fbdev just didnt work cause I had to use those because my backup was messed up. Anyhoo, any help would be appriciated, I'll keep poking around forums.

LOL, I don't think you're cursed though.. Let's see here..
I don't see any reference in the LSPCI to another video device anywhere, but: *IS* there any sort of onboard video controller in that machine? If there's a chance that there IS a onboard device somewhere in there, then re-specify the BusID "PCI:01:00:0" in the Device Section.
Also, there is no Depth=32 possible, so you may as well remove that Display section from the bottom of the file. 24 is the highest depth available by definition for X.
Weird that the log files are empty though.. So what exactly DOES this do now, when your X tries to start? Does it start at all? If so, what happens?

When I type "init 4" from root in the command prompt, I see the "going into runlevel 4 bla bla bla" the last thing I see is "starting X server" after that the screen blinks to black with a blinking cursur, and then a system black (meaning there is a signal, its just a black signal, as opposed to no signal at all which my moniter will inform me of). Then it just hangs there. ctrl-alt-delete does nothing, nor does ctr-alt-F*.

There is no vga port on my motherboard, so im going to assume that means no onboard graphics. My card however does have three outputs, DVI SVID and VGA. I have read about xorg.conf accidently outputting to the wrong port, however if that occured I would get a "no signal" from my moniter and not that flat black.

I know its strange that there is nothing in the Xorg.0.log, those are the ones I coppied from after a few attempts at starting X unsuccesfully, here are the ones from my current session, I have only started X once since messing with stuff:

Well I'm ready for bed, but first, there's 3 lines of interest from the log file above (pasted here in reverse order from bottom of the log to the top.)
The GLX error, I don't know what to make of that; earlier in the log, it says GLX loaded, and then near the bottom, it says 'no suitable GLX module found' or something like that..
The other two messages there look as though they are related to each other---- From what I can make of it, the driver probed your monitor for ranges, and the monitor said it wants a HorizSync 31 - 80 and a VertRefresh of 58 - 75 Which in IMO seems rather narrow, but well, that's a flat LCD screen or something isn't it? Maybe that's what it wants. The middle error does after all say that the range of 40-90 that you have in your xorg.conf is not within the allowable range for the monitor.
Finally, something to consider.. I read your story about how your kernel project didn't go as planned.. But i wonder.. Well, In my experience, the nvidia binary-compiler will tell you if you have anything non-compatible in the kernel or lying around, that will not work with the nvidia module. One thing it doesn't like is frame-buffer devices. It used to tell me to remove the framebuffers from the kernel and try again later.. Yet in your Log file, it **appears** that there is a framebuffer device being loaded and used. I'm just speculating on this, because I really don't know what that thing is, but what **is** that Shadow Framebuffer device? Anyone know???

well, I havent visited here in a while, I was near the end of the school year and very busy with all kinds of stress (super fun trip to germany this summer!) But I did finally manage to get my 3d acceleration working. I am convinced now that there was simply a hardware incompatibility with my motherboard, although i'm not sure which part of it was incompatible. I got a new motherboard and now everything works perfectly. Too bad I had to go through all of that just to get this working. Anyway, Thank's for all of you're help everyone, This helped me learn tons about Xorg and video cards and all that good stuff so it wasnt a complete waste of time. I'm sure I'll be back on here again with my next project.
