Hi All,

This is my first post here, and i am having a gnome Desktop problem.

(1) i am not able to see desktop icons and right click is also not working. but i am able to see the file/folders through the file system.

(2) when i am logging in command mode (init 3)it is prompting for username and passwd, after entering username and passwd in fraction of seconds screen is flashing and prompting for username and passwd.

(3)i am able to login single user mode and there i am going graphical mode(startx)the if i am clicking on the desktop menu it is giving an error like there is not action associated with "///root/Desktop"

i have observed one more thing in /var/log/security log authentication is failed error. attached with 255 error no

what distro are you using ?
fedora,ubuntu,mint,pclinux,....

John, i am using linux 5.1 and kernel 2.6.18--el5

well there is no distro called "linux 5.1"

but i do belive you are talking about the "free" version of RHEL 5.1
from red hat

the "free" unsupported , not updated,and unregistered ( you did not pay red hat for tech support and the ability to get updates )

that is going to be "fun "


i would recommend you install CentOS 5.3
this is a community supported version of redhat BUT WITH software updates


for some unknown reason xorg is not starting

-- some system specs would be VERY helpful
do you have a 3d card ? if so nvidia or ati ?
is it a FULL card or a built in chip on the mobo ?

have you installed a driver for the 3d card , if you have one
how much system ram is there ?
what type of cpu -- pen 4 or old p3 ( PIII ,PII ?) 32 bit or if new 64 bit ??

I've had that problem in the past running Ubuntu 8.10.

It was a matter of the RAM being severely overtaxed. I was able to fix it by running That is, at best, a temporary fix- an extra gig of RAM made all right in the world.

that's true RHEL5. i got this when i was attending Training.

but i dont have any problem when i installed 7 month back. but i belive the above deatils are not going to help.

ether pay redhat some cash $$$ and regester it
or install centOS 5.3


you could install the centos repo's and rpm's on rhel5.1 but it will be much easier to do it on cent 5.3
