No sound with gnome debian wheezy
 

Hello,

I installed debian wheezy days ago however I can not get any sound out of my desktop.
Iam using an intel motherboard

What did you find when you checked the Gnome mixer settings?

In addition, from the command line, try running alsa-mixer and making sure nothing is muted.

I'm guessing that, since this is a desktop, you are using external speakers. With this sort of problem, it never hurts to check that your speakers work with another device, just to rule out a hardware or cable problem. Hardware failure is unlikely, but the check is quick and easy and rules out one possible cause. If it's hardware, no software fix can possibly work.

In gnome there is no mixer under sound&video menu
tried alsamixer command and seems to be fine, volume at 100% and Im using headphones which actually work with another different equipment.

Sometimes, you can find it under "volume control." I don't have Wheezy installed.

But the output device is definitely ruled out.

Have you tried the Live CD test? I know it's cumbersome, but the first step in troubleshooting is to narrow down the list of suspects.

I haven't try a live CD, the system is already install and I need to run it from hard disk instead of live cd.

Tried lspci |grep audio and nothing showed up. So downloaded drivers from well known manufacturer and it returned an error:
ERROR: Module snd not found.

I'm unable to use apt or synaptic,

apt displays the following error message:
E: The package alsa-driver needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.

Synaptic displays the following em:
E: The package alsa-driver needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.
E: Internal error opening cache (1). Please report.

Tried dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq alsa-driver which fixed the error messages to keep appearing and

nano /etc/default/pulseaudio
PULSEAUDIO_SYSTEM_START=1

Reinstalled alsa-utils.

however there is no sound yet

After further inquire, tried:
modprobe sound
and received em, FATAL: Module sound not found.

What kind of sound card? The lspci command in a terminal should show that.

A Live CD test might still be worth it to verify that the sound card is functional.

Do your headphones use the sound port or usb?

Click on the speaker icon on the panel,... open the mixer from there,... Add all of the available channels to the right hand side,... unmute and raise the volumes until you get sound...

I have MSWXP installed on a different partition, it turns out my motherboard soundcard is no longer available.
