No network through switch in linux

I run suse 10.1 and my network setup is as follows:

modem --> router/(100 mbit switch) --> (1000 mbit switch)

My server which runs windows server 2003 is connected to the 1000 mbit switch and has an internet connection. My other computer which runs suse 10.1 works fine when connected to the 100 mbit switch (i can ping every unit), but nothing when its connected to the 1000 mbit switch (every ping fails). Any ideas as to what is wrong? I use the same gateway, dns server and subnet mask as the server.

Please not take this as condesending, but do you know what a switch vs a hub is ?
and if so have you checked your physical connections, can you plug another machine into the 1k switch using the same cables as the linux box used and get an IP (OS unimportant).

yeah, hub just repeats the incomming signal to all outgoing ports (collision hell), switch routes the packages through to a specific port. Tried to switch the cables, no changes. The server still works and my other computer fails
