Exclamation no mp3 playback on rhythmbox for ubuntu

i am TIRED of my windows software bugging out on me, so i found ubuntu and now i want to play my mp3's from my external hdd.

now, ubuntu recognises that i have it pluged in, it shows me an icon at the desktop that allows me to browse my files, but i go to play them with rhythmbox, and it says i need an mp3 plugin to play mp3's.

ive been through forum after forum searching for commands for the terminal but none of them work! i just want to play mp3's and this so far has been my only fuss with using ubuntu so far.

any suggestions?

From memory you want the gstreamer-mad package.
I can't remember precisely what it's called, but if you use synaptic to search for "mad" and install the corresponding gstreamer package you should be sorted.

"mad" not found in synaptic

thanks for the help, but when i type in "mad" nothing is autoselected. all of the gstreamer files that are available i have installed allready, but i had no problems installing those. and none of them which had the "mad" ending.

should i reinstall those gstreamer files?

suggestions?

thanks.

It might be in one of the repositries you need to manually add.
In synaptic, go to Preferences and then to Repositries and click on Add. Tick the two unticked boxes in the window that appears and then click on OK and then on Reload.
Then search for gstreamer-mad.
