Hi,

this is could be for a couple of reasons, eg
a) There was no network and you used install medium that didn't include X11/desktop stuff
b) There was a problem with the installation, and although X11 is installed it isn't working

Assuming a) as a starting point you can try to install the desktop stuff. Here I assume you want the "default" Debian desktop which is gnome. Assuming that you have network, you can do the following:

first make sure tasksel is installed: Ie as root
Code:
apt-get install tasksel
next install gnome using tasksel: Ie as root
Code:
tasksel install gnome-desktop --new-install
Please try to do the above and report back with any problems you encounter.

Did you install from the full CD or a netinstall CD?

If you are on the command line and you want to install Gnome try the command
Code:
tasksel
and check the desktop.

Once done, reboot and see what happens.

Being as this is a new install, you may want to reinstall.

Hi,

please run the commands in my first post. You may be prompted to insert the install cd, but you shouldn't, need to manually mount it.

Hi,

Quote:
tasksel install gnome-desktop --new-install
error E:command line option --new-install
Hmm, I don't know why that didn't work. Is there any chance you made a typo?

Anyway, moving on. IIRC, by default Debian is not configured to have startx working as on some other systems. So, it would be useful to know what happens when you try to start gdm (which should be the default way to start X11 on your system).
Eg. as root run
Code:
invoke-rc.d gdm restart
Please tell us what happens and what error messages (if any) are reported.
Also please attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file to a post here in the forum.

Finally it may be helpful if we know what video chip you are using. You should be able to get this information by running:
Code:
lspci | grep VGA
