Network-Manager: asks for PIN-code when unnecessairy

Hi
Maybe I'm just missing some simple option, but I can't find it on my own and with web searches, so here goes...
I have acquired a Samsung NC10 laptop which has an integrated UMTS modem. I installed the newest Ubuntu (10.10) on it.
Now I inserted a SIM card for mobile internet, and I would like it to stay in there (it's behind the battery, so it would be annoying to always get it in and out as needed).
I only need the modem on certain occasions. But the dialog for unlocking the card shows up every time I log into my laptop.
Is there a way to make it only ask for the PIN when I try to establish a mobile connection? (I didn't save the PIN in the network-manager configuration as that would make it possible to accidentally connect and raise costs).
Thank you in advance,
Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season

What software do you use to configure the modem? Have you looked at the man page for that application of see if there is an option to disable startup on boot?

Have you tried other software to control and monitor the UMTS modem, such as umtsmon?

Umtsmon is discontinued and its maintainers urge users to switch to networkmanager. It does have the feature to disable the need for the PIN. So if that is acceptable for your purpose...

Thank you two for your insights/thoughts.
Sorry for not looking here for 2 weeks, I'm messing with my e-mails (and thus, with my subscription notifications).
My Question is just about convenience: The Network-Manager applet asks for the PIN, even when I don't intent to connect, so I have to close that dialog window on each and every login. So how do I tell the applet not to always ask for the PIN?
Of course, a solution to this is not necessairy for me to use my netbook, it's just one annoying dialog at each login.

As I wrote, use umtsmon to disable the asking. Btw. you can insert the card in a cell phone and disable it there, too. When lost, the card will be open to misuse, though.
