A workstation might be housed in a tower case, sitting on the floor. In that case it isn't on the desk. A workstation could be a thin client. On the other hand a desktop might be a server. The real distinction is between servers and workstations not workstations and desktops.

I have a box at work that Dell calls a workstation and it is sitting on my desk. Therefore it is my desktop machine--as opposed to my laptop. However, my laptop is rarely on my lap (it gets too hot), so it really should be called my tabletop. At home, I have a generic large case custom built computer installed under my desk---We'll call this one my deskbottom. Since I spend a lot of time goofing off and posting on LQ (my wife fails to see the subtle difference), I hesitate to call ANY of these appliances my "workstation". There are no servers is sight--so I have to fetch my own food.

Isn't language a wonderful thing??....
