move development environment from distribution to distribution
Hi all,

I wonder if there's a way to prepare a development environment with all the programs, env variables, and share it along with different linux installation.

I am asking this because I am a (java) developer and most of the time, either because I buy new laptop, or upgrade distro, I need to download reinstall and configure all again.

Recently I was thinking about Virtualization, in this way I could prepare my Linux Box and make it run on VirtualBox or VMWare Player on any distribution.

Are there any other solutions ?

Hi, you can save all your ~/.* files, there are hidden all the configuration files. As for your needed applications, do a list (AppList) and install them from a script :

for i in `cat AppList`;do
apt-get install "$i"

This saves you the trouble of installing everything manually. You could of course do a disk image and use that to install to a new machine.
