Mouse lag when dragging windows

Hi

I have KDE (Arch Linux). My laptop is ASUS K50IJ, 2GB RAM, intel gma4500m, Celeron(R) Dual-Core CPU T3000 @ 1.80GHz.

The problem is that whenever i use OPENGL (in kwin or compiz) when i drag windows mouse is lagging for about 0.5 centimeter. I have read Arch Wiki about mouse polling but this doesn't solve my problem. Is the problem my laptop which is 3 years old? When i use kwin without effects the problem vanish but i wan't to use opengl.

Thanks in advance for any help!

KDE is very everything intensive. Try using a less intensive DE like XFCE or LXDE. You can still enable compiz (or kwin) in both of those. You are getting lag because your (not so great Intel) video card is overheating due to KDE.

Hi

Actually i get almost, if not, the same lag in LXDE or XFCE with Compiz enabled. If i disable compositing the problem is gone but then i've got a lot of tearing when dragging windows.

That's interesting... Looking at your specs again, it could be a CPU problem. 1.80 GHz is not much.

You said you get tearing w/o effects. Could you post a screenshot? Try using a different window manager (not clutter). Maybe Openbox or Enlightenment. Both of those are 2D unfortunately.

I tried to snapshot it but the tearing was not present on snapshot. I have tried many WM (also Openbox, Blackbox, Dwm, i3,...) without compositor enabled any i get tearing anywhere. I think this is a common problem for intel graphic cards. With Open Gl everythings works just fine except that drag lag.

Yeah Intel graphics are definitely not that good. I'm running an Intel card myself. It doesn't game well, but it runs Compiz just fine. Then again, I have an i7 with 8 gigs of RAM. Do you have mesa or intel-dri installed?

Hi

Yes, i have installed both. Intel card is working quite fine tough but this little "drag difference" is annoying me sometimes. No big deal, tough. I am just a perfectionist on some issues :)
