Moolux linux - manually Install applications??
 

After i installed moolux to my hdd next to windows xp, i need to know how to install additional applications/modules(.lzm modules). I have no internet connection yet so i cant use GSlapt(package manager) and i want to install them manually. How can i go about doing this??

btw i'm new to the forum so i apologize if i posted in the wrong place.

Also in case you're not familiar with moolux real install, its like most of the rest of the desktop linux oses (/root, /mnt/dev/hda2, /tmp, etc.) so i have no idea where the applications folder is.

I confess I never heard of Moolux before. You don't need to concern yourself where individual files are located. Either activate the package, or add the package to /Moolux/base and reboot.

The package will contain a directory structure, so files will go where they are needed. E.G. /usr/bin/ for binaries; /usr/lib/ for library files. /etc/ for system wide config files.

Also check if you have pkgtool. This would allow you to install from packages in the current directory. I'm assuming these packages are similar to slackware packages. Read the manpage for gslapt, and look at glsapt --help. Is there an option to install from a local package file?


For information on the directory hierarchy in Linux, look in the LFHS standard: http://tldp.org/LDP/Linux-Filesystem...Hierarchy.html. This isn't MS Windows. There isn't a "Program Files" directory.

You could try looking for a command to install packages with apropos install. Possible tools are installpkg, slackpkg, and slapt-get.

if youve heard of slax, moolux is almost exactly like it. like i said before, when you install moolux to a partition, the installer decompresses the liveCD/USB and it has all of the folders on the partition like it would be in live mode. (eg. /root, /mnt, /bin, /boot, those folders) but i can't seem to install packages to a specific folder. i've extracted them to files and folders but i dont know where to put them. I would just use the gSlapt pkg manager but i dont have a internet connection established on it yet. what im trying to figure out is how to install packages without the packager, like place the package into the right folder or something and restart.

Im trying to leave windows for linux because it sucks. I tried installing a few other distros to my pc but i only have 256 mb of ram and i have 100 GB HDD space

In this case I would go for one of the bigger distros, with a not so ressource hungry desktop environment, like Lubuntu, Crunchbang, Debian with LXDE, and so on. I would not recommend to go for for KDE or Gnome (but maybe starting a flamewar with saying this. So you have great communities that can help you better to learn. Nothing against Moolux, but it is a rather unknown distribution.

You can also try Linux distributions that are fitted for not so powerful machines, like Antix or Puppy Linux.

moolux is slackware 12.2 based, so why not install slackware 13.1 with lite desktop (xfce4/fluxbox/openbox,etc)?

I have a 160mb ram lappy and slackware -current with fluxbox runs fine...

If you've only just moved over from Windows you need something a little more user-friendly than a Slackware-based distro.

You say you have 256MB. Of course, this will only be the case if you have a graphics card. If you use the motherboard graphics controller, that will grab some of the memory. The best things to consider are

CrunchBang or Zenwalk (run in 256MB)
Puppy or Slitaz (run in 128MB)

I thought Puppy the best of the bunch, but that was a matter of taste.

I agree that moolux is an unknown distro which is why I'm not getting very much help. I'm not a big fan of kde but it's been the main one I've worked with. Right now I have a distro with fluxbox and it's pretty good but it's in my opinion another unknown distro and I can't seem to get the pkg manager working correctly. I'll try zenwalk (again) and I'll see how it runs on my pc. Thanks for the help from everyone! I'll also try puppy and I never could get slitaz installed on my system.
