Monitor: Replaced Dual 1280x1024 with Dual 1920x1080 - Won't keep resolution settings
Hello - running Fedora 17, using KDE. I've got an ATI Firepro V3700 (dual dvi card) with the proprietary ATI drivers loaded (have been running this setup for quite a while).
Recently replaced my 2 1280x1024 with 2 AOC 1920x1080 monitors. When I go into KDE system settings>Display and Monitor - both monitors resolutions were showing as 1280x1024. No problem, hit the drop down list on each of them, 1920x1080 was an option for each, set it. Click save. Acts like it's resetting, monitors blink off then on. Asks me if I want to accept the new settings, I click yes. All good to this point. Display settings are now back to both being 1280x1024. Go into the menu on the monitor itself, sure enough it's showing 1280x1024 as the current res. Setting one of the to 1920x1080 and leaving the other at 1280x1024, same deal. Acts like it's doing it, but resets both to 1280x1024.
Now, if I unplug one of the monitors and reconfigure using the method above, it DOES save the the 1920x1080, check the menu in the monitor itself, and sure enough, it's set properly. Plug the other monitor back in, configure, right back to both being 1280x1024 again. So the monitor does support it, but anything dual leaves me with a max of 1280x1024.
Searched the forums, I'm out of ideas on this. While quite familiar with Linux itself, I'm not an X guru. Any help would be most appreciated.
1. You've gone proprietary - IIRC there's something called ATIconfig(?sp?)
2. Add a Virtual setting to xorg.conf.d/
Business Kid - you were right on target!
From my xorg.conf file:
Viewport 0 0
Virtual 2560 2560
When my 2 monitors exceeded the Virtual depth (2560) it reset to a maximum of 1280 (which with 2 monitors is 2560).
Changed this to Virtual 3840 3840 - which allowed 2 * 1920 - and everything worked.
Very cool and thanks again!!
