Mint 17.2 Provides no audio to Logitech Wired USB headset

hi all,

I have a wired usb headset made by logitech, have had it for a little over a year n a half by now. I am using running Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon edition on a dell optiplex 755MT. I've used this logitech headset on both a MacBook with mac os x 10.7 and a dell laptop that also had Mint 17.2 cinnamon edition, and this headset worked flawlessly when playing movies, music, games and anything else that i'd run that provided audio.

Now when I try using it with my optiplex system, doesn't matter if i'm running a game, a movie or just some music, I don't get any audio what-so-ever through the headset. I haven't had to install anything special to get this headset to work on my other machines, both were laptops, no software included with the headset and have never been prompted to download any either. Also, i've come across many posts that suggested installing some bit of software or running some command in terminal, but all of this hasn't helped in any way or form at all.

Can someone help me out with my predicament that will let me continue using this headset instead of replacing it?

Have you tried using alsamixer to look at the playback settings? Maybe one of them got set to mute accidentally or maybe you're using the wrong sound card. In any case it may be worth having a look.

tai-cho,

Welcome to LQ.

Go to Menu > Applications > Preferences > Sound to bring up the Sound Preferences window.

Under the Hardware tab, change, make sure that Analog Stereo Duplex is selected.

Whilst under Hardware make sure your USB Audio Device is selected and NOT the built-in audio.

Do the same for the Input and Output tabs.

You may also need to move the slider bar at the top to amplify the sound to suit.

Hope this helps.

hello,

Yes, I've already tried that....Multiple times after the various software installs and commandline tasks that i've tried.

tai-cho,

I had a similar problem ages ago and I knew that there was nothing wrong with my headphones.

It was definitely a software problem.

Somewhere there has to be a setting which, according to that well-known law, by default is set to either Mute or Off.

That was my problem and from memory I think messing around with alsamixer solved it, as per jdkaye's suggestion above.
I am certain that at least one of my default settings was set to Mute.

No doubt you have already tried installing alsamixer and failed to find a solution?

If not, then try this and then check every setting known to man:

Code:
sudo apt-get install gnome-alsamixer
Good luck.
