I've been looking all day and I can't seem to find anything other than backstep(http://backstep.sourceforge.net), which doesn't quite do what I want it to do and won't compile for some odd reason. What I want is an application like miniMIZE (http://aquaria.za.net/content/view/133/32/) which essentially skips a taskbar and adds a screenshot of a minimized program to the desktop. Backstep adds an icon (which is fine - still what I want, just not as pretty), but when I try to compile it it fails with Checking the Arch site though, I find that I am up to date on all of those packages. Anyone have any other suggestions on applications or why it's failing?

You could try rox as an alternative file manager and desktop. It has the ability to minimize open apps to icons. Poke around in the options when you have the panel set up.
