Migrating from Evolution 2.4 to TBird 1.5-Addressbook

Hey, this is the 2nd time I am going from Evolution to TBird. The first time I did it, I was able to use a perl script to import addresses, but that isn't working ( see below ) this time.

What I tried was highlighting contacts in Evolution, selected all of them and then saving as a vcard.

Then I ran the perl script like this:
./vcard2ldif_V0.6.5.pl < list.vcf > out.ldif

And then attempted to import the "out.ldif" file entries into Thunderbird.

However, Thunderbird did not add a single contact.

Any ideas on how I can get this to work?

Does Thunderbird have its own addressbook, or does it use the system addressbook? If the latter, try importing to the system addressbook, then look for the addresses in Tbird.

Yes, it has its own. I figured out the problem. The import was working find, but the left panel of the address book window as hidden. That panel shows the imported address book. Since I could not see it, I figured it wasn't there.

I had to place my mouse on the left hand side, hold it down, and then drag to the right to unhide the panel.

Before I unsubscribe this thread, I just wanted to give a few tips to other migraters about my experience. I really miss categories and contact portraits. It is extremely useful to be able to group people in more than one way. e.g. it someone is in your family and on your soccer team, they would be in both categories. TBird does not have categories. You can simulate a single category by making address books that map to a category. So I have made an address book named after my soccer team, another named for the waiting list of people who want to join, and others. Then I copied from the imported address book into the appropriate "category" book, and then deleted the original contact card. Unfortunately, there isn't a "move" feature in the address book.

Second, the portrait helps me know what someone looks like before I meet them. Back to my soccer team. I recruited completely unknown people to the team, and was able to recognize them at the field using the portrait images that they had sent to me. Right now I do not have a work-around for this missing feature. Though if I can use HTML in the contact info, I may be able to put a img tag in there that links to their image file.
