message command in smb.conf not working properly

Hi. I'm trying to get this command to work in Slackware 11.

message command = xedit %s; rm %s &

However, only the temp file is removed. xedit doesn't run. Similar is the case with any gui program I try to run through this command. I tested touch and echo, and they seem to work fine through this command. Can anyone help me understand why this is happening?

Regards.
Kamran.
