Memory issues after upgrading to 4 gig ram

Hi Everyone

Im having some problems with my desktop after upgrading to 4 gigs of ram. My computer is an Acer 180t with an Athlon x64 processor.
I have checked the bios and it sees the 4 gig of ram. What happens is that any program will shut down after a few minutes of running.
I am currently running Ubuntu Studio 8.04. I have had the same problem with 64 studio, Ubuntu 8.10, Ubuntu 8.04.
All these versions were for the 64 bit system.

The odd thing is that the system will run fine with 3 gigs, (3x 1 gig) or
3.5 gig, (3x 1 gig, 1x 512meg).

Sometimes the system will not boot with the 4 gigs installed. There is a lot of numbers on the screen and the last line says something about kernel panic?

I was wondering if there is some memory issues with the Ubuntu kernel when running 4 gigs of ram?

Has anyone else had this problem?

Does anyone have a solution?

I have checked the Acer web site which was little help. Some of the Acer forums say to upgrade the bios. I checked the bios version in my computer
and it already has the version it says to upgrade to.

The computer manual says it can handle up to 4 gigs of ram, so it is supposed to work.

Thanks in advance for your help
Vanessa

I went to the Linux Foundation's web site and searched for 4 gig ram. I found at least 4 references to x86_64 failing with 4 gig ram.

I'd say use the 3.5 gig. :-)

Thanks Stress

I didnt know about the Linux Foundation web site. I read through
a lot of the posts, there were a lot of reports of problems but no
solutions.

So for now Im using the 3.5 gig of ram.

Thanks

Kernel Trap dot org is also a good web site to research bugs in Linux.

I have 12 servers running Ubuntu Server 8.10 64-bit with 4 GB of RAM with no problems. These systems ran just fine with Ubuntu 8.04, 7.10 and 7.04 before upgrades. I also have about 8 systems running Ubuntu Desktop 8.10 64-bit with 4 GB of RAM without problems. These were also upgraded from earlier versions.

Your problem may not be Ubuntu.
