Mandriva 2008.1 can't find the CD-Ropm Device it's installing from

Got new computer, should be able to run mandriva pretty.
I installed vista (64bit ultimate) but left a 100Gb partition for screwing arround with in linux (or reparationing when i need more space and because i couldn't decide whether to put it for programs/games/vista(200Gb) or documents(inc movies, music and anything that doesn't mod the registry)(400Gb)).

Anyway I downloaded mandriva 2008 spring x86 free ed installer (not live) DVD from my ISP (it doesn't count towards my usage)
Also downloaded Fedora 9 installer.
I downloaded with DownthemALL and i'm pretty sure i had an MD5 check set.
I burned with nero 8 and did validate contents

I try to install mandriva and after getting to the blue screen where i selected "Install Mandriva 2008 spring".
As soon as it starts I presses esc, cos i like to be able to read what it's doing (I can't help myself)
It goes through detecting USB devices etc.
:Label1:
Then comesup with "insmod failed: no CD-ROM Device found" or something like that. Then it asked me to select 3rd party device or driver (can't remember) As i try everything from IDE-CD, IDE-Generic, SATA options, the Silicon Images optitions (Silicon images makes my sata disk controller)
Each time it askes for "device parameters, options :_" i leave it blank.
:Goto Label1:

I tryed fedora 9 worked fairly fine, (generated error after disk check was completedd successfully, but when i skipped disc check after reboot, then all good) I installed boot wrong and had to format it off before i could get back into windows, but that's OK as i didn't like it anyway GNOME by default, GNOME makes me bleed inside.
And it's KDE looked like GNOME too, I must have done something wrong.
But it doesn't matter as i always intended to use mandriva anyway.

Back to mandriva, I did a MD5 Check on the ISO, and it failed (but maybe i used the wrong MD5, hard to select from a ftp server with all the differnt ISOs, MD5s, SHA1s, and attached asc's for every differnent current release of madriva 2008.1 for every ach in One,3 Cd's, and dvd installers.

Anyway I redownloaded, this time toing a SHA1 check with Down them ALl. burned and validated contents with nero again.
tryed installing again.
Same resualt.
Then i tried again with a install DVD in both my DVD drives (since i now had 2)
Same result.

until you get a better reply, my sata drive has an option in bios to act like an ide drive.

I am wondering is that option available to your sata optical drive?

2) Have you tried to start the install in text mode....press F3

Umm IDE stands for (Integrated Drive Electronics)
It's another name for the ATA (Advanced Technology Attachment) part of SATA (Serial ATA) and PATA (Parrel ATA)
IDE's a low level (Like firmware level almost) software thing, i think, where as PATA is Hardware.
All SATA drives are IDE, as are all PATA drives.
It's just that at some stage IDE became synonymous with PATA (proably cos it was the first)
Don't quote me on this as it's only from a couple of seconds of reasearch.

But anyway, My motherBoard Defualt to SATA as IDE (other options are AHCI (advanced host controller Interface, something more advanced for SATA but i was told to leave it of as i created more problems than it was worth)
and the final option is Raid, hmmm I wonder what wou;ld happen if i raid(raided?) DVD drives. I don't think i would work.

Everything i just said may be wrong, i'm not very knowledgeable about hardware but that's my 2 cents

Hi, I have the same burner you list, LighScribe 20X SATA , but from LG.

I had a similar problem and rtfm, to my surprise, 20x speed is only supported for particular media.

Will burn and pass verify test on "dodgy brand" disks.

Hang on I'll get it....

OK, the dvd-ram is ...

LG GH20 sata

Under System environment,
Quote:
* Compatibility problem in write/read function may occur with media depending on the media manufacturing quality.
* For DVD(+-)R 20x support media: Mitsubushi Kagaku Media, That's Maxwell (MID: MAXWELL 003, MXL RG04) are recommended.
* Upon the media condition or some user's environment the maximum speed could not be guarenteed.
Anyhow, I reburned it at 8X and it worked fine.

Hope that helps.

Regards, Glenn

ps. My dvd (sata) comes up as /dev/sr0, and most installers will look for it at the 1st sata port, or they won't be able to list it as a choice (installation media device). Cheers, Glenn
