Hello everyone!

I have a twinview set up, and I love it very much. And it works. Without any problems.

I've been using gnome for a while now, but aspects of it feel some what clunky. In particular, I don't like how it works with my twinview setup (but I have some other minor grievances), how the panel behaves with it, etc. And mostly, I dislike how it places new windows in a twinview environment. It works great in a single desktop, but twinview/xinerama, not so much.


So, I'm all ears to give something new a try, and would like to hear about other people's opinions and experiences in using twinview with other window managers.

Initially I had somewhat similar issues with gnome+dual_head but learnt to live with it :-)

I use compiz regularly and despite what others think I find it a very good tool to increase productivity. I found "smart window placement" somewhere in compiz or gnome (compiz most probably). After clicking the window launcher icon or giving the window launch command I move mouse to the monitor and click somewhere to open the new window there. Upon my request, one of compiz chaps has also kindly written a feature in Put plugin to move windows across monitors using shortcut keys. It's got a thread in features section on compiz forum.

Would second your though about panels though. They seem somewhat lacking.

My experiences with other desktops:

Tried KDE4 but didn't like it after a day's use or so. Seems slow and somewhat clunky (more than gnome).
XFCE: Seems a reasonable choice. Has some useful options in panel that gnome lacks but not my cup of tea.

Nothing specific from me but thought I'll share my experiences of dual head with gnome :-)

I'll have to give that a try; it sounds like exactly what I want.
For the panel, I have the top one on the left screen, and the bottom one on the top of the second screen. It feels very arbitrary, but it works well enough to keep me sane

I put one panel at the bottom of each screen. You can add as many panels s you want wherever you want. You can use docks as well if you're a fan :-) (which I'm not)
