login manager gdm

Problem: login manager for gnome is not working

I close the system by command from tty1 [Ctrl+Alt+F1] because GUI got in an inconsistent state due to screensaver. Next time I have boot:
It should ask me for a user and password but it dose not;
It just stop with showing the background picture.[mouse is working here]

OS: Ubuntu 10.4

Are you sure you're doing a full reboot and not having some hibernation / suspend / resume issue. You should be able to do [Ctrl+F6] to load GDM / KDM.

I am pretty sure I was doing a full reboot. I guess the problem come from the point where I have close by force the system when the GUI got stuck.
I should have restart only the gdm.
With this occasion I have upgrade to last version of ubuntu.
To backup my data I have stop gdm and use startx to have access to some of gnome applications. So now I no longer have this problem.
