login
Is there any way I can create a user account that, (like 'ROOT') will not appear on the login screen? Root is hiding in 'other'. Can I hide another user in 'other'?
Using Fedora 9 Thanks to any and all - JaredR |
You can hide or show users with you login manager. If you are using the KDE desktop you can also edit your kdmrc file to achieve the same thing.

yes
Yes, I can manually create a new systems user id say 222 and go to preferences and select the "hide" option. But this only hides the user from the 'user manage' list. However the new user shows up as a choice when the logon screen comes up. Some how I have to get it in the "other" category. thanks,

Oh man, you have no idea. That GDM greeter _sucks_. My favorite commentary is this guy(top comment) https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=449728

Oh ya, the common logic of hiding user accounts is to give the account a uid of under 500. But I don't know what else doing that would break.

Looks like your temporary workaround is to change to the KDM greeter.

what a mess
Thanks folks - the buggzilla info was great - I think it's time for me to learn how to encrypt my whole system. I just made the big jump from F6 to F9 on four machines. I am not ready to move up to another version now over this one issue. Still you got to wonder; why would someone create this big security hole for an opsys that is designed to be so secure? Thanks again to all, Jared
