little blank rectangle on my desktop

Somehow (I was looking in Preferences, I think) a small blank rectangle appeared on my desktop, and it won't go away. Nor does it seem to have any use. How do I remove it?

I know that GIYF, but I have no idea, how to query for something for which you do not even know the name.

I am currently running Linux Mint XFCE, if that is relevant.

Assuming it's an application that's generating a blank window, what happens if you hold down <Alt> and press the tab key repeatedly to spool through your applications? Can you highlight it, and see a name?

No. Good idea, but Alt+TAB just gives the applications that appear in the menu bar. Clearly, it is no application. No idea what it is (if it were, I wouldn have to ask :-( )

I found out already. It turns out to be "Panel 2", and I could remove it by pressing a little red cross on the "Panel Preferences" menu, after having set it to "Panel 2". Well, great. Wish I would have been able to see that this little blank square was a "Panel"; it sure did not reply to right or left mouse clicks.
