Linux Mint 16 Mate -- Can't save sound hardware settings

Fresh installation of Mint 16 Mate 64-bit with all updates applied. In Sound Preferences, I select the output device (USB analog stereo headphones with microphone), switch to the hardware tab and select the same device, test speakers, everything works as desired. I close the Sound Preferences window, try to play some video, but no sound. Back to Sound Preferences and the selections in both panes have reverted to the built-in audio analog stereo device.

As best I can determine so far, the settings made in Sound Preferences are not being saved. My work-around is to change the settings, then leave the Sound Preferences window open when I need to listen to audio. Not my idea of a good solution. :-)

Any guidance appreciated.
