kmail clutter in home directory

Since I upgraded to Mandriva 2006 from Mandrake 10 (actually it was a reinstall), kmail has been depositing random image files from my incoming mail directly in my home directory - sometimes it's 3 and sometimes it's 3 dozen and they aren't hidden files - they're basically just clutter. They come with cryptic filenames (like temp files) but serve no useful purpose, b/c I can delete them and they still appear in their respective emails. It's basically just an annoyance. Does anyone know how to configure kmail so that these files go somewhere else (or nowhere at all)??

thanks
