I have not used any server yet. I simply installed Kile and Latex (TeTex), ran Texconfig, checked the system (with Kile), got the message that The system is fine and ready to be used, and tried to include some references in a Latex file. I am still trying....
In other words: I did not do anything special, custom or esoteric. I liked your suggestion of creating the link to the bib files, but, sadly, it failed to solve the problem.
This is an old thread, but perhaps the solution is that you must create a Kile "project" and add the .bib file (or link) to the project. Then everything should work. I didn't see that you mentioned doing this, so that might be all you need.
