Keyboard mapping problems on the terminal screen

Hello,

I am running CentOS release 5, for some reason in the terminal screen when I hit keys, a ^ shows up before the key. Also certain keys do not work like the Q and W key. However in the GUI desktop screen, I am able to type keys like normal without any issue.

Troubleshooting wise, I have rebooted the computer. Confirmed keyboard mapping in /etc/sysconfig/keyboard is correct. Confirmed key maps in /lib/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty/defkeymap.map is also correct.

Any tips?

Thanks!

Could this be a hardware keyboard issue? What make and model is your keyboard? Have you tried with another one? (I trust PS/2 keyboards more than usb).
I think the ^ character is a control sequence, eg if you hit ctrl+c you see a ^C on the terminal.
