KDE4.6: Grid Desktop activity for Kubuntu

I notice that when I installed KDE 4.6 into Slackware current it came with the "Grid Desktop" activity by default, but not when I install KDE 4.6.2 into Kubuntu. Can anybody tell me how to get it for Kubuntu?

Grid Desktop for KDE 4

In order to see the grid that you appear to be referring to, go to System Settings, then Desktop Effects, if they are disabled, enable them and then under the tab "All Effects" you should see something called Snap Helper, which is most likely what you are looking for. There are other settings that may be of interest that are not reliant on the desktop effects. The Window Behavior section also has grid capabilities and may be more of what you want. Hard to say for sure without seeing what the default is with Slackware.

That's not it. The "snap helper" grid relates to the placement of windows. The "grid desktop" activity has to do with the placement of plasma widgets.

I no longer have Slackware installed, so I can't show you the activity, but I can show you where I'd find it if I had it on my Kubuntu Desktop.

CORRECTION: In the ever-shifting, ever-confusing lexicon of KDE4, it used to be an "activity". Now it's a "layout", and I'd find it in in the "layout" list along with "Desktop", "Folder View", "Newspaper Layout", and "Search and Launch"

Thumbs up Here it is

For some reason the grouping desktop layout is not included in the ppa provided by Kubuntu for 4.6.2 version of KDE (Maverick).

I have compiled it myself. I have also created a deb with it, but I cannot post a link to it, security policy prevents it. I will try to do it in a following post, or send it to you as a PM.

I guess you will also have to install a package kdeplasma-addons (this is the original source package for groupingdesktop containment as well). But my deb package will not tell you about this need.

Here is it:
