KDE starts but without fonts !!!
Hello,
I installed on my slackware 8.1 KDE desktop. It starts but there are no fonts !!! What does it mean ? Simply look at your desktop and imagine that all places where something is written are empty ! I can start each KDE application but of course without visible words, letters, etc. X-server seems to be configured properly. Programs running on it say Xterm looks as usually. What's wrong ? Please help me, igadoter |
Do you have any text anywhere, like in the KDE menu? Try going to the control center and making font adjustments or installing some if needed...

There are no text at all. Even in KDE menu or control center.

Same Problem
I'm having the same problem on Slackware 12.1. I'm using a Sony Vaio vgn-nr110e laptop (with the Intel 965 chipset). When I use the vesa driver in xorg.conf it works fine, but I can't get the resolution to fill the display (I need 1280x800 and can only get 1024x768 with vesa). Using the intel driver in xorg gives me full res, but there is no text anywhere--not in the kmenu, konsole, or even firefox (even webpages don't have text--I see some blue lines here and there after entering a google search, but thats it). I can switch back to vesa and it's back to normal. Was this problem ever resolved? Any ideas?

Somewhat resolved
Hmm, I tried creating an ordinary user and started X using the intel driver and it just magically worked. Root still wouldn't work in X but logging in as a regular user gave me full resolution and readable menus. I then changed inittab so that the default runlevel would be 4 and rebooted. Now everything works both as a regular user AND as root when going into X from kdm. Hope that helps someone :)
